2024 New Bedford Police Union Scholarship

The New Bedford Police Union is pleased to announce the following (3) three available LEO scholarships available to our Police Union Family for $1000. This scholarship is awarded to high school students attending an accredited college in the Fall Semester of 2024. This scholarship is awarded to enrolled college students that have not been previously awarded a scholarship and meet the listed criteria.

  • The James G. England Scholarship is in memory of fallen New Bedford Police Officer who served with the department for eight years until being killed in the line of duty on September 14, 1955.
  • The SSGT. Joseph Camara Scholarship is in memory of fallen New Bedford Police Officer who served with the department for four years. Staff Sergeant Camara served with the U.S. Army National Guard in the 115th Military Police Company. He was killed on September 1, 2003, while serving his county proudly in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
  • The Sergeant Michael Cassidy Scholarship is memory of fallen New Bedford Police Sergeant who served with the department for twenty-seven years until passing from COVID-19 on April 28, 2021. Sergeant Michael Cassidy proudly served in U.S. Marine Corps during Operation Desert Storm. Sergeant Cassidy also proudly rode for the New Bedford Police Union’s Unity Tour Team which raised money and awareness for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

The New Bedford Police Union is pleased to announce the following available scholarships available to the Greater New Bedford Community for $500. This scholarship is intended to reward the students of our community that do not come from a Law Enforcement family.

  • The New Bedford Police Union Community Scholarship is a scholarship intended to reward students of the Greater New Bedford area who have demonstrated academic achievements and community involvement. Students who participated in clubs, superlatives and sports are encouraged to apply.
  • The New Bedford Police Union Retiree Scholarship is a scholarship in memory of all Retirees who served their department and community proudly. The scholarship is intended to reward students of the Greater New Bedford area who have demonstrated academic achievements and community involvement. Students who participated in clubs, superlatives and sports are encouraged to apply.
  • LEO Scholarship Eligibility: The child, stepchild, or grandchild of a current member or retired member of the New Bedford Police Union in good standing. The member or retiree must be or had been, employed as a full-time Police Officer with the New Bedford Police Department in good standing. 
  • All LEO Scholarship Applicants MUST attend an accredited College or University seeking a degree in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement related field (i.e. forensics, nursing, social work, psychology…)
  • All General Community Scholarship Applicants MUST attend an accredited College or University seeking a degree in fields within an Associates of Science, Bachelor of Science or Master of Science.
  • Applicants are eligible for only ONE scholarship award per lifetime, unless NO applicants meet the criteria. Award based on recommendation of the New Bedford Police Union Scholarship Committee.
  • All applications questions must be answered, accurately, legible, and truthfully. If the question is not applicable please indicate N/A.
  • If more space is required to answer questionnaire, please use a lined sheet of college ruled paper and attach with Scholarship Application
  • All applications must be include the most recent academic transcript and two letters of recommendation from an academic professional, teacher/professor, guidance counselor, respected community member (employer, religious member, civic organization, government member, etc…) and student statement describing themselves and academic to professional goals.
  • Completed Applications must be post-marked no later than June 30, 2024 and mailed to PO BOX 51534, New Bedford, Mass 02745. Please retain copies of the application.
  • DO NOT send any applications via inter-office mail or hand deliver to any member of the E-Board or Scholarship Committee
  • Please notify [email protected] once the application has been mailed. You will receive a confirmation notice to the indicated email address listed on the application. DO NOT submit scanned applications to this email address.
