The Importance of Training

Tragedy, anger, frustration, resentment and public outcry should not be the trigger for state and local governments to acknowledge the need for allocating resources to the public and the police. Likewise, the occurrence of such incidents should not be a reminder for state and local governments to follow up on previous assurances that programs would be put in place to better train and prepare officers for the important role they play in society.

Unfortunately, the implementation of important training programs such as ICAT, which had been promised to our members, has yet to be completed. The announcement to the public indicated that all officers would be trained by the end of 2021.

The benefits of high quality training are lasting and impactful. Those benefits are shared by the officers receiving it as well as the citizens they serve.
